Peak
Mount Kom
A route to a Rhodope ridge held sacred since antiquity, past an ancient sanctuary and a restored chapel, wrapped in local legends of treasure and refuge.
Mount Kom is a Rhodope ridge regarded as sacred, with archaeological significance and many legends attached to it. The route passes through the small villages of Gudevitsa and Gozdevitsa at the foot of the peak, then continues over mountain meadows and along the ridge, past an ancient sanctuary site and a small chapel that local people have restored.
Many stories are told about the peak: of ancient Greek treasure, of hidden brigand loot, of a buried pot of revolutionary flags, and, according to some archaeologists, of a possible sanctuary of Dionysus. Others speak of an underground church that served as a refuge during Ottoman rule. These traditions are kept alive in the oral history of the local villages.
